Countdown to one million trees

The countdown has begun!

If you could pick just one tree to represent the one-millionth tree in the Kettle Creek watershed, which one would earn your vote?

Kettle Creek Conservation Authority will plant its one-millionth tree this June and is inviting the public to vote for their favorite species.

“The candidates for the One-Millionth Tree include: white pine, white oak, sugar maple and tulip tree,” says Luiza Moczarski, public relations supervisor. “We hope that the community will get involved and vote online to help us pick the one-millionth tree”.

The Kettle Creek Conservation Authority is holding a public poll for all local residents and votes can be cast for one of four different trees from now until May 31, 2013.

Would you choose the white pine that symbolizes creativity, life and longevity? Or would the white oak, which is considered the mightiest of all trees, be your choice? Maybe the sugar maple which is associated with balance and promise, would earn your vote. How about the tulip tree, one of the Carolinian Forest species, whose beautiful shaped flowers stand out in the spring?

Votes can be cast online at www.facebook.com/KettleCreekCA, on the KCCA website or sent by mail to the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority office in St. Thomas at 44015 Ferguson Line, N5P 3T3. The -results will be announced on June 3, 2013.

In addition to casting a vote for a favorite tree species, the public is invited to participate in the actual tree planting ceremony scheduled for June 22. The event will include a free strawberry social as well as guided hikes through the heart of the Kettle Creek forest.
