St. Thomas – Dalewood Conservation Area will be hosting two Learn to Fish programs on Sunday, July 15. This free fishing event, hosted by Kettle Creek Conservation Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is open to children, teens and adults interested in learning how to fish.

“Fishing is a great way to get active outdoors and unplug from technology,” says Rob Lindsay, Dalewood Conservation Area Coordinator. “And people may be surprised to learn that the Dalewood Reservoir offers some great fishing spots.”

The Learn to Fish event is a fun and engaging program that combines practical teaching with supervised hands-on fishing. The two-hour session includes everything needed for a successful day out on the water including an experienced instructor.

Dalewood will host two sessions, from 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm on Sunday, July 15. In the first hour, participants will learn essential fishing skills like how to rig, bait and cast a fishing rod, fish identification and how to fish safely and sustainably. The second half of the session will take participants down to the water to fish. Life jackets, fishing rods, bait and a promotional fishing license are included free of charge. Participants are also welcome to bring their own gear.

The Learn to Fish program is one component of the Fun on the Water Initiative introduced in 2018 by Kettle Creek Conservation Authority in partnership with Southwestern Public Health and the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. A new fishing platform was installed on the reservoir and canoes and kayaks are now available for rent at the Dalewood Conservation Area gatehouse. The Fun on the Water and Learn To Fish Program both aim offer the community of Elgin free and/or affordable opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy nature.
