Port Stanley – On Thursday, May 31, more than 40 art students from Central Elgin Collegiate Institute, Parkside Collegiate Institute and Arthur Voaden Secondary School will be attending Landscapes on the Lake in Port Stanley. The goal of the event is to help the students build a stronger connection to their local environment, especially Lake Erie, in the hopes of inspiring their artistic eye, as well as instilling the idea of art as a way to evoke emotion, and inspire conservation.
This is the first event of its kind in the area, organized by the Thames Valley District School Board and the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority. “Students will have the opportunity to consider perspective as they experiment with photographic techniques and compose photos using the lakeshore as inspiration. Students will then work on a collaborative art piece with local artists from London,” explained Michelle Rees, the Thames Valley District School Board’s Learning Coordinator for the Arts. “With collaborative art, just as with environmental stewardship projects, one person can see how their contribution can make an impact on a larger scale” added Erin Mutch, Learning Coordinator for Environmental Education.
“We hope the students will come away with a better appreciation for how the natural world can influence their work and instill a desire to get involved in protecting and restoring our local watershed,” said Betsy McClure, Stewardship Program Supervisor for the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority.
