KCCA Cancels Reservations for Long Weekend
For immediate release
St. Thomas – Due to wet ground conditions, Kettle Creek Conservation Authority has made the difficult decision to cancel all reservations at Dalewood and Lake Whittaker Conservation Area until Tuesday, May 21, including reservations for the Victoria Day Long Weekend.
“We are currently in the process of contacting all campers who made reservations for this weekend, and will be issuing full refunds,” says Elizabeth VanHooren, KCCA’s General Manager. “We realize this is a major disappointment for campers eager to kick-off the camping season but the campgrounds need time to dry out.”
VanHooren says the Authority had hoped that conditions would improve this past weekend. However, the persistent rain and cooler weather means the grounds at both campgrounds remain saturated preventing the ground from drying out and in some cases hindering maintenance to get campsites ready for visitors.
“Last week alone the watershed received over 50mm of rain – completely saturating the ground,” says VanHooren. “As of Monday evening we still had ponding water on some sites, and roads throughout the campgrounds are extremely soft.”
In these conditions, the Authority is concerned that vehicle and trailer activity associated with a long weekend could mean damage that would take the entire summer to repair.
The Authority will be contacting all campers affected by the cancellations and issuing full refunds. Campgrounds will remain open for day-use. Seasonal campers will still have access to their sites.
“We need time to allow our campgrounds to absorb this spring’s rain so that we can offer a great camping experience to our clients for the remainder of the summer,” said VanHooren.
